You were sent a license page. Here is what it is.
A photographer sent you a page with a price on it. This is what it means, what you get, and what to do if you would rather pay another way. It is written by a photographer who licenses this way for a living, for the people on the other side of the page.
What you are being offered
The photos, or the film, of a project you worked on, licensed to your company for the uses named on the page: your website, your social channels, print, advertising, or whatever the page lists. The page also names the term (usually one year, sometimes longer, sometimes with no expiry), the territory, and the number of images. The fee covers exactly that.
You are not being billed for something you already own. The photographer who made the pictures has held the copyright to them since the shutter fired, and the license the seller or the listing agent bought covered selling the house, not your marketing. That is not a Resid rule; it is how copyright works. Who owns the listing photos walks through it.
What you get when you pay
- The originals. Full-resolution files, released when payment lands: by email, or as a download on the gallery they came from.
- A written license agreement. A PDF with its own reference number, stating the images, the permitted uses, the term and the territory. Your bookkeeper has something to file and your marketing team has something to point to.
- A receipt. By email, with the link back to the license page, so you can find all of it again a year from now.
Nothing else. No account to create, no subscription, no login. The page takes a card and that is the whole transaction.
What it costs
The number on the page. The photographer set it for your company’s use; Resid did not. In this field a builder’s or a designer’s marketing use of a project commonly runs to a few hundred dollars, and more for advertising, for product manufacturers, and for long terms. There is no rate card explains why every price is a decision rather than a lookup. If the fee is a problem, reply to the photographer. They can change the scope, the term or the price and send the page again.
If you would rather not pay by card
Ask the photographer. They can take a check or a bank transfer and record it on their side, and everything above still happens: the agreement, the files and the receipt. The license is dated to the day your payment arrived.
What you may and may not do
The permitted uses on the page, and in the agreement, are the whole grant. A few things the license does not include unless the page says so:
- Handing the images to another company for its own marketing (a supplier, a dealer, a magazine). They license their own use.
- Uses the page did not name. A license for your website and social channels does not cover a billboard or a trade show booth. Ask: adding a use is a conversation, not a problem.
- Dropping the photographer’s credit where the page asks for one.
Renewals are simple. Before the term ends, a reminder with a renewal link comes by email, and paying it extends the same license for another term with no gap.
Already using the photos?
Some pages arrive after the photographer found the work in use. The price on that page covers the time the images have been up as well as the term ahead, and paying it makes the use licensed from the start. Nobody is being fined; the fee is for the license. If you would rather take the images down instead, tell the photographer, and that settles it too.
